What is ChatGPT, in Simple Terms

What exactly is ChatGPT

When discussing large language models (LLMs) with individuals, I often use the term “ChatGPT” for clarity. However, it’s essential for business owners to understand that ChatGPT is a specific brand within the wider realm of LLMs. This common association largely stems from OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT, being the pioneers in popularizing these models. While there are a multitude of LLMs available, OpenAI’s initial venture into this field has made them synonymous with the technology in the public eye. Despite this, it’s important to look beyond branding and accurately refer to these tools as large language models or LLMs for short. This distinction helps in recognizing the broader spectrum of possibilities and innovations within this field.

What does this mean for you? LLMs like ChatGPT are powered by neural networks, complex systems adept at pattern recognition. These networks, trained on enormous datasets, are capable of understanding and generating language, engaging in interactive games, and even creating art. Essentially, they are powerful generators of possibilities, their capabilities shaped by the data they have absorbed.

The volume of data involved in training models like ChatGPT is immense, with costs potentially surpassing the GDP of a small nation. This significant investment enables ChatGPT to effectively mimic the complex dance of human language, understanding the intricate relationships between words and phrases.  In short, LLMs understand words and relationships between words, and through relationships some sense of meaning, anything beyond that is yet to be proven and is a lot of hype.  We have been working around the clock with these models for some time now, and can assure you, most of what you hear, is hype.  However, lets be clear, this innovation is quite possibly the BIGGEST innovation since the first use of the word!

ChatGPT's training data, encompassing hundreds of billions of words, is likely tens of thousands of times more extensive than a standard encyclopedia

For business owners like you, adopting this technology can be transformative. It’s akin to equipping your business with a powerful tool that enhances creativity and efficiency. LLMs excel in generalization, learning from vast datasets to predict or generate plausible responses and content. Imagine having an encyclopedia at your fingertips that can mimic human thought processes. This capability is a byproduct of the model’s ability to discern patterns in language. While LLMs are not always correct and shouldn’t be relied upon as subject matter experts, they can broaden your horizons if approached with the right questions.

The ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ quality is both a strength and a limitation of AI tools like ChatGPT. These tools offer incredible versatility, assisting in various tasks ranging from content creation to customer support and idea generation. However, it’s important to remember that these models are not experts in all fields. They can provide information and generate content based on user input, but they are not infallible. To be fair, LLMs can be quite adept at certain tasks, and through techniques like prompt engineering, we can direct the model’s output to be more specialized. However, this guidance needs to be provided by a person, a ‘driver,’ so to speak.

As a business owner, understanding this duality is crucial before fully integrating generative AI into your operations. Indeed, these tools are powerful, but they are not replacements for human expertise and judgment. By recognizing where their strengths lie and where human oversight is necessary, you can effectively harness their potential without overestimating their capabilities.

We are committed to helping you navigate the exciting possibilities of AI, ensuring that you make informed decisions about its application in your business.
